Overview

Inflammation is one of the few mechanisms that genuinely crosses the line between psychiatry and neurology. A subset of patients with major depression show elevated peripheral cytokines. Microglial activation appears in neurodegeneration. Immune dysregulation turns up in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, and autoimmune and post-infectious syndromes increasingly declare themselves with psychiatric symptoms before anything else. Taken together, these findings suggest that some of the distinctions our two fields draw may be, at least in part, immunological.

This Special Issue of Dusunen Adam Journal of Psychiatry and Neurological Sciences brings together research articles, brief reports, review articles, and letters to the editor on the role of inflammatory and neuroimmune processes in psychiatric and neurological disorders, from mechanisms to treatment.

We are especially interested in translational work that bridges the laboratory and the clinic, biomarker studies aimed at informing real-world clinical decisions, and contributions that keep neuroscience and clinical mental health in the same conversation.

Scope and Aims

We invite original research articles, systematic and narrative reviews, brief reports, and well-documented case reports on the role of inflammation in psychiatry and neurology.

Human and experimental studies are equally welcome, as are methodological and conceptual papers.

Indicative Topics

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

• The inflammatory hypothesis of neuro-psychiatric disorders: cytokines, CRP, and immune signatures in neuropsychiatric disorders.
• Microglia, neuroinflammation, and neurodegeneration (Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis).
• Immune dysregulation in schizophrenia and the psychosis spectrum.
• The gut–brain axis, microbiome, and inflammatory signaling.
• Stress, the HPA axis, and inflammation-mediated effects on brain structure and function.
• Autoimmune encephalitis and immune-mediated disorders with psychiatric presentations.
• Neuropsychiatric sequelae of infection, including post-viral and long-COVID syndromes.
• Inflammation, suicidality, and treatment resistance.
• Inflammatory and neuroimmune biomarkers: fluid markers, PET imaging (e.g., TSPO), and multimodal approaches.
• Anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory strategies as therapeutic interventions.
• Lifestyle, metabolic, and environmental contributors to neuroinflammation.

Dusunen Adam Journal of Psychiatry and Neurological Sciences is an international, peer-reviewed, open-access journal published since 1984 by the Bakırköy Prof. Dr. Mazhar Osman Training and Research Hospital for Psychiatry, Neurology and Neurosurgery.
